Search engine ranking is a measure of the online promotional success of a web page or website. Improving search engine ranking in competitive niche markets require a good deal of knowledge and expertise. Most search engines default to ten organic or natural listings per page. Many include sponsor links before or to the right of the results. Many searchers will be satisfied with the first page or two, so getting a top 20 or 30 listing can have an impact on a website's success.
Google’s Page Rank
Algorithm As many of you are probably already aware, Google ranks a page according to the number and quality of links leading to that page. For example, if your page has 100 quality links leading to it, it will rank higher than another page that has only 20 links pointing at it. Quality links come from pages that are themselves "important" (Google's own terminology).
Tips to improve your Search Engine Ranking
• Key words density is the ratio of a keyword or key phrase to the total words on a page. It is one of the most critical aspects of search engine optimization. To improve search engine ranking, your keyword density must not be too high or too low. The best keywords you should include on your site are those that are very popular, but have a low number of competing web sites.
• Don't just focus on your main keywords. For Example, if you are a realtor in a particular area, don’t just optimize your site for “real estate." Optimize your site for dentist, florist, movie theaters- I think you get the idea. Before you decide which keywords to target, you'll want to do a lot of keyword research. Throw natural listings in there as well. You would be amazed how many unique visitors will come through to your site when outside of the box thinking occurs.
• Create a site that is focused on the end user. So many SEO's spend too much time creating a navigation that is to please the Search Engine Spiders that they forget about the end user. Think about what your target market needs to accomplish their goals, and then put it on your site so that they can find it fast.
• Create a site map that tells people where everything is on your site. You will get about a 1% click through rate to your site map, however, it will do wonders for those who know what site maps do, and the Search Engines will like it as well.
• Google seems to give weight to the title of your page. By title, I mean the text that is sandwiched between the HTML TITLE tags in the HEAD section of your web page. If you use a Web editor that automatically inserts a title like "New Page", remember to change it to some meaningful text with your keywords inside to reap the benefit of this feature.
• According to a paper published by one of Google's founders, if the links pointing to your page has the relevant keyword text in them, it will cause your page to be ranked higher in search engine results. How many times have you clicked on a link and looked at the URL, and it contained about 32 extra letters and numbers in it? Google won't spider any URL that looks like this. Avoid using dynamic URLs.
• Make sure all pages link to at least one other page. Links to pages that don't link out are called "dangling links". Google founders, Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page, once wrote about Dangling links.
• Dangling links are simply links that point to any page with no outgoing links. They affect the model because it is not clear where their weight should be distributed, and there are a large number of them. Often these dangling links are simply pages that we have not downloaded yet. Because dangling links do not affect the ranking of any other page directly, we simply remove them from the system until all the Page Ranks are calculated. After all the Page Ranks are calculated they can be added back in without affecting things significantly.
• Get as many people to talk about your site as possible. How do you do this? Create a "how to" or something that will benefit your target market. The best way to get good links to your site is to create world class Search Engine Content- write about 225-300 words of copy for each keyword and plant it on your site each day. Grow, grow, and grow. Make it as natural as possible and the Search Engines will reward you will a first page ranking.
• Once you built a good site with great SEO content, your site will continue to perform. Always add new pages of content to your site and you will see miracles occur.
